Electric scooters. Towards compulsory insurance, but in the meantime, personal ones arrive

Cthe number of scooters increased. More and more are being bought and an increasing number are being shared. The expansion began in the big cities and has now spread throughout Italy. As the numbers grow, the claims obviously also grow. In the first months of 2021 (January-April) they registered 46 serious accidents and two deaths. Recently the death of the 31 year old from Capalbio hit by a scooter in Paris.

It is now clear that the current legislation is not sufficient to regulate such a rapidly growing phenomenon. The DDL presented in the Senate which provides for the establishment of more stringent and cut obligations and limits precisely on micromobility. We remind you that today the equation to bicycles is still in force.

In the DDL it is introduced the obligation to wear a helmet even for adults, suspenders or reflective vest. It also imposes the obligation on the owner of the electric scooter to take out one liability insurance policy, to protect the driver and third parties in case of accidents with people, animals or things.

Turn of the screw also for sharing. The companies must equip their vehicles with civil liability insurance capable of covering damage caused by drivers or accidents to the driver, as well as providing the driver himself, in the event of a request if he does not have one, a protective helmet and high visibility reflective vest or shoulder straps.

It must be said that the sharing companies already have insurance to cover damages caused to third parties. To impose it are practically all the municipal notices in order to activate the rental in the area. For private individuals it is a completely different story. There are very few who have insurance and even in this case they rely on the so-called family insurance.

However, the insurance companies did not stand by and identified the request and equipped themselves with specific offers dedicated to micromobility. They offer their customers annual policies starting from a few tens of euros and which insure against different types of accidents on different types of vehicles, whether registered or not. 24h Assistance for example, with prices from 39 euros to 144 euros, it covers accident costs and the refund of the excess and the rental with a single package. Sara has devised a formula called MiMuovo and with 80 euros a year it offers coverage against accidents on any shared or rented vehicle, offers legal protection and excess protection. Ibl Banca with TrafficGo spending between 88 and 213 euros which offers legal protection and coverage for damage to pedestrians, cyclists or passengers. The offer Axa InGiro costs three 30 and 150 euros and covers accidents to oneself or third parties while moving on shared vehicles.
