Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan leaked that next year the government would give subsidies for electric motorcycles. Possibly, the electric motorbikes receive a subsidy of IDR 6.5 million. What about electric cars?
Not only electric motorcycles, according to Luhut, electric cars will also be subsidized. However, the amount of subsidies for electric cars is not yet known. Luhut said that the subsidy amount for electric vehicles is currently being finalized.
“Immediately, now we are launching subsidy electric cars. For example motorcycles, we are finalizing how many million we want to give subsidies for (electric) motorcycles. Maybe IDR 6 million, in Thailand maybe 7 million, we could be IDR 6.5 million or how much , more or less. Cars, how many millions we want to give,” Luhut said at an event broadcast on PermataBank’s Youtube channel quoted on Wednesday (11/30/2022).
Luhut said electric vehicles get subsidies because they no longer buy gasoline. So, doing the math, according to him it is more profitable to use electric vehicles than fossil fuel vehicles.
“And now we want to convert, or swap motorcycle engines for electric motorcycles, and that can be done. Now motorcycles are being prepared,” Luhut said.
Another benefit of using electric vehicles is better air quality. Because electric vehicles no longer emit pollution.
“The air quality in Jakarta will definitely be better. As there will be no more fumes from transport cars, motorbikes, cars, it will definitely be reduced. It will be healthier for us. So use it. Buy electric cars later, even if It’s now we’re overwhelmed, the list has been queued for 6 months, due to chip issues,” Luhut said.
“If next year’s motorcycles are replaced with electric motorcycles, just replace them, then you will get subsidies,” he continued.
