Toyota is also preparing to expand its range of electric cars, but its boss is not a fan of these cars. Quite the contrary.

Electromobility is a trend that many believe is inevitable. Even with some government’s plans to ban cars with only internal combustion engines, it really seems that one day we will run exclusively on electricity. Nevertheless, even in the top management of car manufacturers, there is an opinion that electric cars are overestimated and will only cause big problems.
Akio Toyoda himself, the head of the Toyota carmaker, which has been fighting with the VW Group in recent years for the position of the largest car manufacturer in the world, thinks so. He shared his views at a recent conference of the Association of Japanese Automobile Manufacturers, of which he is chairman.

“The current business model of the automotive industry will collapse,” warns Toyota president of a rapid transition to electromobility. Toyoda draws attention mainly to the lack of electricity, which can cause a large boom in electric cars. In his opinion, specifically, the home Japan would deplete all available electricity in the summer if all cars were to run on electricity.
In addition, Toyoda points out that electric cars are not as environmentally friendly as their promoters try to claim. “The more electric cars we build, the worse the carbon dioxide will be. When politicians argue; let’s get rid of all the cars that use gasoline, do they understand? ” Toyoda asks rhetorically, recalling that Japan, for example, relies primarily on coal and gas-fired power plants. That is, those that are not considered an example of an ecological solution.

Criticism of battery electric cars comes from Akia Toyoda shortly after the Japanese government announced that it was planning a ban on the sale of cars with internal combustion engines. From 2035, according to these plans, only cars with hybrid or pure electric power could be sold in the Land of the Rising Sun. A similar ban is being prepared by the United Kingdom, and similar voices are being heard from other countries, at least at the level of large cities.
Although Akio Toyoda criticizes electric cars, at the same time the Japanese carmaker is joining the competition and is also working on their expansion. By 2025, it is preparing ten new electric cars, the first of which, a crossover the size of RAV4, will arrive next year.. However, the manufacturer’s management takes this boom with a grain of salt, believing that it is not too late to come with electric cars. In addition, they do not see them as the only direction for the future, instead Toyota wants to offer different drive systems for different types of customers.
