GM Electric Vehicles Emit Unusual Noises, Company Says It’s Normal
General Motors has addressed concerns about unusual noises emanating from some of its electric vehicle models. The company has assured customers that these sounds, often described as squeaking or knocking, are normal and indicate no mechanical problems.
The noises are primarily noticeable when using adaptive cruise control or single-pedal driving mode at low speeds, typically around 5 miles per hour. Drivers have reported hearing these sounds during several scenarios:
- While driving at approximately 5 mph with adaptive cruise control or one-pedal mode engaged.
- After a brief stop followed by acceleration.
-
When lightly pressing the accelerator while the vehicle is coming to a complete stop.
"Squeaking and knocking noises are natural noises associated with the ABS system and do not require maintenance," GM stated.
The intensity of the sounds can vary depending on the distance to the vehicle ahead. The closer the object, the louder the noise. This phenomenon has been observed across a range of GM electric models, including:
- BrightDrop: Zevo 600 (2023, 2024), Zevo 400 (2024), BrightDrop 400 and 600 (2025)
- Chevrolet: Blazer EV (2024, 2025), Bolt EV and Bolt EUV (2023), Equinox EV (2024, 2025), Silverado EV (2024, 2025)
- GMC: Hummer EV Pickup (2022-2025), Hummer EV SUV (2024, 2025), Sierra EV (2024, 2025)
While these sounds are deemed harmless, drivers who find them bothersome can potentially minimize them by increasing the distance to the vehicle in front through the vehicle’s instrument panel settings. This adjustment won’t completely eliminate the noise but might make it less noticeable.
This acknowledgement from GM aims to reassure drivers about the normalcy of these sounds and alleviate any concerns regarding potential issues with their vehicles.
