Electric Car Demand Decreases Drastically in Germany: KBA Report

The data collected by the KBA (Federal Motor Vehicle Agency) shows that the decrease in demand for electric cars is very impressive even in three months.

According to the information published on the KBA website, registrations of fully electric cars (BEV) in Germany decreased by 28.9 percent in March, but the situation of this sector is not encouraging even in the first quarter.

In the first quarter of 2024, a total of 304,725 new cars with an alternative driver were registered in Germany, which combines fully electric cars, conventional and plug-in hybrids, cars with fuel cells and gas drives. This segment, which accounts for 43.9 percent of the total number of 694,785 passenger cars registered in the first quarter, shows an increase of 4.4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2023.

The biggest increase was in the plug-in hybrid segment – 44,495 cars were registered, which is an increase of 19.8 percent compared to 2023, while the demand for BEV cars fell by 14.1 percent (81,337 units on the sale).

Among German BEV manufacturers, buyers preferred Volkswagen (8,637 units), followed by BMW (7,959) and Mercedes (7,720). Among importers, Tesla did the best with 13,068 registrations ahead of Škoda (3,922) and Hyundai (3,777).
