Electric car batteries: the European Union wants stricter rules

L’European Union intends to become a leading player in the market of batteries for electric cars. This, however, will also require specifics rules regarding their environmental sustainability. Automotive News Europe reports that the European Union intends to impose laws stricter requirements for battery manufacturing as part of its projects to promote electric vehicles and clean energy. Virginijus Sinkevicius, European Commissioner for the Environment, said:

In our assessment, the EU will become the second largest market for batteries in the world. The number of batteries placed on the EU market and their importance will grow in the coming years. Their environmental sustainability should not be ignored.

The European Union has invested heavily in yours Battery Alliance project to create a globally competitive battery sector that allows for success independent from China which today supplies batteries to most car manufacturers. By 2025, the European battery market is expected to be worth € 250 billion. By this date, production should reach a level that will satisfy the demand of European manufacturers.

Given the rapid growth of this market, the European Union intends prepare rules to make the production of accumulators more sustainable. As Sinkevicius always points out, the European Union will ask the industries in the sector for a more responsible supply of raw materials, the use of clean energy during production processes, the reduction of hazardous substances and the increase in energy efficiency and duration of batteries.

The new rules should apply to any type of battery, regardless of their chemistry, both to those produced in Europe but also to those arriving from abroad.
