Electric car and roadside assistance – This is the new “empty tank”

(Elbil24): Last year, the number of road assistance and car salvage increased by 20 percent, figures from the insurance industry show. Running out of power is now the new “empty tank”.

Veihjelp, with a deductible of a few hundred bucks, is part of the hull and partial hull insurance with Norwegian insurance companies. For roadside assistance, there are usually some reasons that stand out, says communications manager Sigmund Clementz in the insurance company If in a press release.

Then he recounts:

– Puncture, flat battery, starting difficulties, lockout and engine failure.

Battery charging

According to figures from the industry organization Finans Norge, there were 251,653 roadside assistance and car salvage assignments last year.

This is an increase of 43,225 assignments from 2020. The increase corresponds to just over 20 per cent.

With more and more electric cars in the car fleet, the roadside assistance assignments are also changing a bit. With more electric cars on the roads, there is an increase in the need for battery charging and transport of cars with flat batteries.

– Driving the car out of petrol or diesel far from the nearest petrol station is a classic. Now it is also noticeable that people run the batteries empty on the electric car, says Clementz.

Fear of running out

Because the insurance terms are good and the fewest electric cars offer two-way charging, flat batteries often end up with car salvage.

– The electric cars have the same coverage on ordinary insurance and the opportunity to call a rescue car in such cases, Clementz says.

In a nationally representative survey conducted by If and YouGov last year, two out of ten answered that they fear running out of fuel or electricity far away from the petrol station or charging point.
