By 2025, electric air taxis could transport passengers from JFK Airport to midtown Manhattan, on quiet, emissions-free journeys that last about seven minutes.
Joby Aviation manufacturer JOBY.N conducted an exhibition flight at New York’s Downtown Manhattan Heliport on Sunday, the city’s first-ever electric air taxi flight and the first time Joby has flown in an environment urban.
The device can charge in about five minutes while passengers disembark and board, said its chief executive JoeBen Bevirt. The idea is that travelers book their trip, like a ride-sharing app.
The company aims to launch commercial passenger service in 2025 and is in the third of five stages of certification with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The cost of booking a trip has not yet been confirmed, but the company has previously said it will likely be comparable to carpooling.
