A polling station was shelled by Ukrainian forces in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s Kherson province, Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing a local election official appointed by Moscow.
Today is the first day of the Russian presidential election. These will last until Sunday and will also be held in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine or even Transnistria, the pro-Russian separatist territory of Moldova.
Ukraine, the EU and NATO have denounced as “illegal” the holding of these elections in Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine.
Incidents of arson attacks in two polling stations
A woman set fire to a screen at a polling station in Moscow on the first day of the Russian presidential election, Russian state news agency Ria Novosti reported.
“Moscow’s election commission told Ria Novosti that procedures (at the polling station) continued as normal after the incident”. Video broadcast by independent media outlet SOTAVision shows the arrest of a suspect after the fire at a polling station was put out.
In another incident, according to the Fontanka news outlet, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a polling station in St. Petersburg.
