Election ticker: Union urges unity before exploration

7.46 a.m.: Spahn calls for the CDU to be reorganized

The CDU deputy chairman Jens Spahn calls for fundamental changes in his party after the Union’s election debacle. In order to sharpen the profile, one has to talk more about Union issues such as “internal security, economic strength, jobs, crisis competence, good governance”, says Spahn of “Welt am Sonntag”. This also requires an “ideology-free view” of issues. In addition, after the explorations with the FDP and the Greens, the CDU needs a new staffing. “Now it’s a matter of preparing for the future, just going on like this is not an option,” says the Federal Minister of Health. In this context, the 41-year-old also reiterates his call for a stronger role for party friends in his age group: “The next generation after Angela Merkel must now become more visible.” In order to achieve more unity between the CDU and CSU, Spahn suggests that candidates for chancellor and election programs be decided at a joint party congress in the future.
