The Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Shahid, has been elected as the new President of the UN General Assembly in New York.
In a meeting of the body he received the votes of 143 countries, 48 votes were given to the Afghan applicant Rassoul. Shahid will take office in September for a year. As chairman of the general assembly, he will also be responsible for the general debate at the end of September, which due to the pandemic is not yet clear in which context it will take place.
