The FPÖ emerged as the clear winner of the National Council election. This is shown by the result published late in the evening, including the voting card forecast. Disappointment is prevalent among the ÖVP and SPÖ. They ended up in second and third place. NEOS overtook the Greens and is in fourth place. The small parties missed out on entering the National Council.

In addition to the five parliamentary parties ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens and NEOS, the Beer Party, List Madeleine Petrovic, KPÖ and None of them took part in the election. In individual federal states, other small parties were on the ballot.
There is great euphoria after the FPÖ’s clear victory. NEOS also sees itself as “one of two election winners”. Disappointment can be felt among the ÖVP and SPÖ. The Greens see a clear mandate to continue fighting despite losses. Experts expect long exploratory discussions. According to the result including voting card forecasts, there are three possible two-party coalitions.
However, only those between the FPÖ and ÖVP with 108 seats and those between the FPÖ and SPÖ with 97 seats would be broadly protected in terms of mandate. The ÖVP and SPÖ – the classic grand coalition – currently only have 93 seats in the 183-seat National Council. A majority in the House requires at least 92 seats. As far as a three-party coalition is concerned, ÖVP-SPÖ-NEOS would be possible with 111 seats; an ÖVP-SPÖ-Green coalition would also provide a broad majority with 109 seats.
What does the election result mean?
According to projections, the FPÖ will emerge as the winner of the National Council election. This is followed by the ÖVP and SPÖ. NEOS is just ahead of the Greens, the KPÖ and the Beer Party do not make it into the National Council. How should the election result be interpreted? What is surprising about the result? What might a government look like? And what does the election result mean for Austria?
