This legislation would allow New York City to finally set its own speed limits, because 42 percent of pedestrians struck by motor vehicles at an impact speed of 25 miles per hour will be killed or seriously injured.
Sammy’s Law is named for Sammy Cohen Eckstein, a 12-year-old boy who died after being struck by a speeding driver in Brooklyn just blocks from his home in 2013. Since then, according to event organizers, more Two thousand people, including nearly one hundred children, have been killed by traffic violence in the city.
