Elderly People Have Better Memory for Things Happening Simultaneously, Study Finds

Better memory for things happening around you at the same time

Although we live in an age of scientific and technological revolution, there are times when the wisdom of the elderly shines brighter than cutting-edge technology. So, as cognitive function declines with age, how do older people exercise their intellect?

In relation to this, research has shown that elderly people do not show much interest in information that is irrelevant to them, but this actually improves their memory. A research team at the University of Toronto’s Neurological Institute in Canada conducted a memory experiment on 24 young people aged 17 to 29 and elderly people aged 60 to 73 and compared the results.

First, research participants were shown a series of pictures along with words that were distant from each picture. For example, a picture of a bird and the word jump are shown together.

After a 10-minute break, participants performed a similar experiment, but this time they were shown three types of picture-word pairs. The first pair was a picture-word pair from the previous experiment, but to distract attention, the same picture was shown with a different word in the second pair, and a new picture-word pair was shown in the third pair.

As a result, compared to new picture-word pairs, memory for picture-word pairs seen for the first time was found to be 30% higher in older people than in young people. The research team explained, “Elderly people seem to have better memory and understanding of things happening simultaneously around them than young people.”

This partly explains why wisdom accumulates with age. The research team also estimated, “This gap in memory helps older people demonstrate decision-making and problem-solving skills.”

The results of this study (Hyper-binding: A unique age effect) were published in Psychological Science.
