‘s-Gravenzande 02.10.2023 – A pleasant outing with a duo bike ended on Monday morning, October 2, for a resident of De Kreek in a water accident on the Noordlandseweg.
The fire brigade received a report at 10.53 am of a person in water on the Noordlandseweg (N211).
A resident of the De Kreek residential care center had gone for a bike ride with a supervisor on a special duo bike. At a detached house that was being renovated, the supervisor went to take a look and briefly left the resident alone on the cycle path in the duo bike.
When he returned, the tandem bicycle was gone; a cyclist who happened to cycle by saw a man with the tricycle lying in the ditch. The victim was lying under the bicycle with his feet still secured in the pedals, but his head was still above water.
Several passers-by offered help and first the victim was removed from his precarious position and brought to shore with combined efforts. The driver of a commercial vehicle with a hooklift hoisted the heavy duo bike back onto the side. As a result, the deployment of the fire brigade was ultimately not necessary.
Miraculously, the elderly man suffered no injuries from his perilous adventure, only a wet suit. The man was returned by ambulance to the De Kreek residential care center. An officer cycled back to the Kreek with the supervisor on the duo bike. The latter was happy that the accident ended well, he had forgotten to put the handbrake on the bicycle.
