Elderly Dresden residents defrauded of 30,000 euros in panic call scam

With a so-called panic call, unknown people defrauded a woman (93) of around 30,000 euros.

They called the 93-year-old woman in Klotzsche on Thursday afternoon and said that her grandson had caused a fatal road accident. In order for her not to have to go to prison, a deposit of several tens of thousands of euros would be required. In the evening, a total of around 30,000 euros worth of silver and gold was given to one of the fraudsters in the city centre.

In Leuben, unknown people tried to cheat a woman (83) of around 25,000 euros over the phone. They said that there were several break-ins and that the perpetrators also had the 83-year-old man in their sights. In several phone calls they urged the woman to withdraw 25,000 euros because it would not be safe in the bank. The perpetrators said they would take the money and keep it for the woman. Before this happened, the elderly woman became suspicious and called the police.

Police advise:

– Don’t let yourself be stressed on the phone!
– Talk to relatives or neighbors if you get such calls!
– Do not give money to unknown people or transfer money to unknown accounts!
– Do not give out personal account details or TAN numbers over the phone or online!
– If you suspect anything, call the police!

Unknown persons stole a woman’s wallet (84) containing around 150 euros, a cash card and personal documents.

The 84-year-old man was shopping in a shop on Rudolf-Renner-Strasse. While she was paying, she noticed that her wallet had disappeared from the shopping bag. Shortly after, the perpetrators withdrew around 1,000 euros using the woman’s credit card.

Police advise:

– If your card is stolen, stop it immediately!
– Keep your handbag closed and don’t let it out of your sight in the store!
– Keep wallets, cell phones and valuables in locked pockets close to your body!
