Florida authorities arrested an elderly man of Cuban origin accused of attempting to murder his wife and causing a fire in an apartment in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of the city of Miami.
The detainee was identified as Nelson Granado, 70 years old, and according to the local media America TeVehis wife has accused him of being a violent person.
Dinorah Granado indicated to the aforementioned medium that the old man suffers from schizophrenia, so his life with him has been difficult. She also points out that he has been a victim of domestic violence for years, and on this last occasion, her husband tried to kill her by burning down the house with her inside it.
The fire destroyed the house and caused the residents of neighboring apartments to have to be evacuated. According to authorities, no one was injured, but many of the homes ended up without power.
According to the old woman, before the fire, Granado sprayed her feet with alcohol while yelling that she had fungus, in the same way, she set fire to her son’s mattress, who lives with the couple.
After being arrested, the old man confessed to doing these things, telling authorities that his wife and son were having sexual relations, and that the old woman also had similar encounters with a niece.
Now, Granado faces charges of attempted murder, arson and domestic violence, for which the Miami-Dade court set him on $40,000 bail.
“He was always manic, depressed and bipolar, sometimes I think it’s like that because of the medicines he was taking for schizophrenia, I asked them to take them away and he calmed down, but I think manic and bipolar is from birth,” added the old woman during an interview with the aforementioned local media.
Additionally, the couple’s son was arrested, as he had a restraining order related to a previous case in which he attacked his father with a machete.
If found guilty, the old man could spend up to 15 years in prison on the attempted murder charge, while the penalty he faces for the fire will depend on the amount of damage caused by the flames.
Lastly, the domestic violence charge can cost you anywhere from 60 days to 30 years in prison, all depending on the harm done to the other person.
