Elderly Couple Stuck in South Carolina Hospital for 17 Days After Road Accident Finally Able to Return to Quebec

Stuck in a South Carolina hospital in the United States for 17 days after a serious road accident, a couple from Farnham will finally be able to return to Quebec in the coming days.

Awaiting a transfer from the McLeod Regional Hospital in Florence, South Carolina, to an establishment in the Eastern Townships, Danielle Tarte finally received the news late Thursday afternoon: an ambulance plane should bring them back, she and her partner Robert Bougie in Quebec this Saturday.

The lives of Mrs. Tarte and Mr. Bougie, aged 75 and 81, almost changed on April 17. While returning home after spending the winter in Florida, the couple was involved in a traffic accident on Highway 95 near South Carolina. The vehicle rolled over several times after being struck by a wheel that came off a semi-trailer truck.

While Mr. Bougie suffered a spleen hemorrhage and was discharged from the hospital after five days, his wife suffered more serious injuries, including broken elbows and ribs. , and above all, several deep lacerations to both legs.

The septuagenarian is bedridden and has been taking numerous antibiotic solutions since the accident. She will need cosmetic and possibly orthopedic surgeries. Her spouse stayed by her bedside while she waited to be repatriated to Quebec.

A request was sent to the hospital in his region, Brome Missisquoi Perkins in Cowansville, on April 20, but it seems that the establishment had no bed to receive it.

According to Jacques Dubuc, a friend of the family, it is completely absurd and inconceivable that due to a lack of places in a hospital center, an elderly couple find themselves stuck more than 1500 km away – or 15 hours away – from his home.

The management of the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CIUSSS) of Estrie-CHUS was unaware of the situation before being contacted by TVA Nouvelles. However, the CIUSSS stated that it receives patients daily from outside the country or from another region of Quebec.

Usually, we proceed by priority, according to the person’s state of health and the care the patient needs, regardless of the distance.

In addition to worrying about the state of health of his spouse, Robert Bougie must also live with additional stress since, despite his numerous steps, he has not obtained any answer as to who will have to assume the hospitalization costs. And in this case, they could be in the tens of thousands of US dollars.

After two weeks of waiting, the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS has finally found a room to accommodate Danielle Tarte in one of its Sherbrooke hospitals.
