FR / Bielefeld / Sennestadt – An elderly couple from Bielefeld reported fraud on Saturday, August 19th, 2023. Unknowns had pretended to be her daughter and asked to pay bills.
On Thursday, the people from Bielefeld received an SMS in which scammers pretended to be their daughter. The supposed daughter stated that she had a new cell phone number and asked Bielefeld to save the number and then continue writing via an established chat app. The scammers eventually tricked the couple into settling several supposed scores.
The police reminds: Perpetrators pretend to be relatives in a messenger scam in order to exploit the trust of the victims. You should therefore always call the last known number to clarify whether the message really came from the person in question. Be suspicious if you are asked for a money transfer via short message service.
