Sweden’s U21 national team played 1-1 away against Italy in the qualifiers for the European Championships 2023 on Tuesday. The Swedish Football Association now announces that Manchester United talent Anthony Elanga, who played the entire match, has been subjected to a racist comment from an opponent in the Italian team.
– We have told our version of what happened and have submitted an oral report to both the referees and the match delegates. Now we are waiting for feedback through the match report and the referee report. Once they have arrived, we decide how to proceed. The head of security Martin Fredman is also informed of what has happened, says U21 and boys national team manager Claes Eriksson to the association’s website.
– No one should have to be exposed to racism, it is completely unacceptable. We all stand behind and support Anthony in this.
After the final whistle, a minor quarrel broke out between players from both teams. TV pictures from the match show how the referee was forced to keep apart an upset Anthony Elanga from the Italian players.
