El Salvador’s former president changes his citizenship so that he is not deported from the country – the World

El Salvador’s former president, Salvador Sanchez Serens, has become a Nicaraguan citizen, Nicaragua’s official government newspaper reported on Friday.

An arrest warrant for Serena was issued in El Salvador a week ago, but the change of nationality means Nicaragua cannot deport her. Serens is accused of money laundering, embezzlement and illicit enrichment.

Two years ago, Nicaraguan citizenship was acquired by another former President of El Salvador, Maurice Funess, who is also being wanted for corruption.

Funess and Serens are former members of parliament from the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). Funess was president from 2009 to 2014, and Serens from 2014 to 2019.

Seren left El Salvador last December and has not returned.

The current president of El Salvador, Najib Bukele of the populist New Ideas party, has recently urged those involved in corruption under previous governments to be tried.

Bukele presented a draft judicial reform to parliament on Tuesday, which aims to remove the statute of limitations for corruption crimes, including retroactively.
