El Salvador will receive first batch of vaccines against COVID-19

El Salvador is preparing to receive the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, President Nayib Bukele reported on Tuesday through his Twitter account.

“Tomorrow morning (Wednesday), an Iberia plane brings the first batch of AstraZeneca vaccines from India. The vaccination begins tomorrow with our front-line personnel. This will take a few days, vaccinating thousands of health workers daily, ”said the president.

Among the front-line personnel that would be vaccinated are health workers, the military and the police who carry out public security tasks and who also collaborate in the fight against the pandemic.

Bukele clarified that this first shipment of vaccines are not those of the COVAX mechanism created by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote equitable access. “These are the ones the government acquired,” he stressed.

Under the COVAX mechanism, El Salvador will receive 51,480 doses of vaccines from Pfizer and 324,000 from AstraZeneca.

The government of El Salvador announced in December that it reached an agreement to acquire two million doses of the vaccine developed by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

El Salvador has registered 58,023 confirmed cases of coronavirus, 1,758 deaths from the disease and 52,688 people who have overcome the disease. There are currently 3,585 active cases, 47 in critical condition and 333 serious.
