The Salvadoran Archery Federation (Festa) announced this Thursday the organization of the 2024 Pan American Youth and Masters Championship, in which the participation of 20 countries and approximately 260 athletes is expected.
This event is the return to El Salvador of a competition endorsed by the Pan American Archery Confederation after 12 years of the last Pan American event held in the country.
The Pan American competition will take place from May 6 to 12 at the Jorge Jiménez Shooting Range, located in the Merliot Sports Center, and will grant places in the under-21 category for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games, in Asunción, Paraguay.
Roberto Hernández, technical manager of the Festa, explained the importance of this competition for the athletes who will represent us and also what it means for the country to host an event with a high number of competitors.
“This event has achieved the call of a very good number of countries, to date 20 have registered and two are still pending to do so, this adds up to approximately 260 archers. “We are excited to have such a big event, taking into account that the last one was in 2012,” said Hernández.
Regarding the expectations of the Salvadoran delegation, the Fesat technical manager stated that they are very high and that several athletes who will seek qualification for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games are taken into account.
“We will have strong teams like the United States, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, among others. El Salvador will have Jennifer Gómez individually, in the compound modality, as our spearhead due to her experience, and the recurve bow team that is made up of Kathia Ramos, Ana Palomeres and Jimena Vigil,” said Hernández.
The places that will be in dispute will be three pairs, plus four individuals in recurve bow, 10 athletes per category. While in compound there will be three mixed and two individual, with five archers per category.
Hernández also added that the team they will present in this competition will have archers from the U-15 to master categories.
“As a Salvadoran delegation we will have 23 athletes who will compete in U-15, U-18, U-21 and master categories. Some will debut in international competition with this participation, and what better way to do it with an event as big as this and with very good archers, who will be found in more competitions for many years,” said Roberto.
For her part, Jennifer Gómez assured that the preparation work has been very good, since they managed to train in a camp in Colombian lands.
“We have been working hard, for this event we were in a camp in Colombia, which will allow us to seek a good result in this Pan American event. To date, I have achieved a score of 681 in individual, so we hope to improve it,” said Gómez.
It is worth noting that the national team already has experience competing at an international level and hopes that in its Pan American debut it will be excellent.
“It is a great achievement for the country that this Pan American event can be held and in which we can compete. For my part, I have experience at the Central American level and this will be my first time in a highly renowned competition,” said the goalkeeper.
