El Salvador had a good debut in the pre-qualifier of the Junior Tennis World Cup – – 2024-03-05 23:16:11

The El Salvador women’s team defeated Saint Lucia 3-0 in a series with a quick ending that marked a good start in the group stage of the U14 Junior Tennis World Cup Pre-qualification of Central America and the Caribbean.

The tournament takes place in the renovated Ciudad Merliot Sports Complex, which is one of the legacies of the past Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

The first point for the national women’s team was won by Ximena Esperanza by beating Kahenya Mukora 6-1 and 6-0 in a match with a quick outcome.

“I like this tournament and I feel like I am playing very well. The first game was tiring and hard, but I won, thank God. The goal is to try to play well and try to win the final,” Ximena commented.

El Salvador managed to increase the advantage with Camila Morataya’s 6-0 and 6-0 victory against Jaelyn Henry to take a 2-0 lead against Saint Lucia.

“I felt very good, it is my second time playing this tournament and I got my match easy. The strategy to win was to attack, move it and hit my serve,” said the 12-year-old tennis player.

The series was sealed with the 6-1, 6-2 victory of Isabella Martínez and Camila Morataya over Jaelyn Henry and Kahenya Mukora in the doubles match.

The Salvadorans’ next match will be against Suriname, a duel in which they will try to secure first place in the group.

In the afternoon was the debut of the Salvadoran men’s team, which is made up of Mateo Gutiérrez, Sebastián Martínez and Marco Avendaño, and they faced Barbados.

The best two from each group will advance to the main bracket where the champion who will advance to the next phase of the World Junior Tennis Championships will be defined.

Honduras, Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Curacao, Barbados, Panama, Suriname, Saint Lucia and El Salvador are the participating countries.

The youth tournament has a record of 87 tennis players, from 17 countries. 12 teams participate in the women’s branch and 17 in the men’s team.

As explained by Diego Navidad, referee of the tournament, the champion of each branch will advance to the next qualifying stage of the World Junior Tennis Championships (WJT), where Mexico, the United States and Canada will also participate.

“We have around 17 countries competing, it is the largest team competition in the world and it is a pre-qualifying phase. The winning teams from here are going to compete against Mexico, the United States and Canada for a place in the final of the U14 World Cup, which will take place in September in Europe,” explained Diego Navidad.
