El Salvador began on Friday the vaccination process against COVID-19 for those over 12 years old and pregnant from 16 weeks of gestation at a time when the Health authorities have warned an increase in infections and deaths from the disease.
The Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, gave the news to the press after supervising the disaffection efforts of the health establishments.
President Nayib Bukele confirmed the information on his Twitter account: “ANOTHER GOOD NEWS FOR OUR COUNTRY: Appointments for vaccination against COVID-19 have already been enabled for everyone over 12 years old.” The president explained that the legal representatives of the young people “should make their appointment at http://vacunacioncovid19.gob.sv in the option that says” Minor “, and should accompany them to the vaccination center.
UNICEF reacted by congratulating the government for updating the immunization strategy.
Alabí invited young people and people who have not yet received the vaccine to arrive at 162 immunization points throughout the country, at the three supermarkets or at the Metacentro in the new El Salvador Hospital in the capital to receive the drug. In the latter, almost a million doses have been applied and after enabling vaccination for those over 18 years of age, from an average of 50,000 doses per day nationwide, it rose to almost 69,000.
“It’s good that we can now vaccinate our underage children, we have to protect ourselves,” Manuel Castaneda told The Associated Press when he waited for his daughter’s turn to be vaccinated.
In recent days, an increase in infections has been confirmed. After having records of less than 100 cases a day, 285 were confirmed on Thursday, while the death toll rose to 14, the highest so far this year. The report states that, of the 7,742 active cases, 126 people are in critical condition and 286 are serious.
So far the Central American country has registered 86,620 infections and 2,613 deaths. 76,265 people have overcome the disease.
In El Salvador, the smallest nation in Latin America and with a population of 6.7 million, the Public Health authorities plan to immunize 4.5 million people.
The country has received 9,830,640 doses in 25 shipments and since February 17, when the application began, the first dose has been delivered to 2.7 million people, while 1.4 million have received the second dose.
In El Salvador, vaccines from AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Pfizer, Moderna are being applied. and Sinopharm.
