El Retiro and other historical parks in Madrid close this Sunday due to gusts of wind | Madrid

Some of them have only been reopened for a few days, but parks such as El Retiro will close again this Sunday as of six in the afternoon as a preventive measure, due to the strong gusts of wind announced by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). At the entrances to the parks, informative posters will be placed so that they are evicted at the scheduled time.

The City Council has indicated in a message on social networks that this red alert for adverse weather conditions prevents Madrid residents from a possible risk. “The Retiro has a surface of 120 hectares and many of its trees are large and of advanced age, so they may suffer damage or fractures in branches and trunks,” the Town Hall explains in a statement. The closure will also apply to the Quinta de los Molinos, Torre Arias, Fuente del Berro, Jardines de Sabatini and the Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste.

According to AEMET forecasts, strong gusts of wind are expected that will reach maximum speeds of up to 79 kilometers per hour and, from nine in the afternoon, the red alert will be deactivated and the yellow alert will be activated, with winds of up to 43 kilometers per hour.

Once the alert is over, an inspection of the incidents produced is carried out and the branches and fallen trees are removed. Those that are considered unstable are eliminated and the most relevant damages in the other elements of the park are repaired. The City Council has indicated that, predictably, the parks will reopen at six in the morning on Monday, June 1, when the protocol is deactivated due to gusts of wind.
