El Pasoans seek transparency and knowledge in new city manager candidates

El Paso City Council will interview the four finalists for El Paso City Manager on Monday.

There could be a new city manager on Monday after more than a year since the second city manager was fired by the city.

The candidates are not unfamiliar with the city’s government, as they each currently work for the city.

The four finalists are:

Robert Cortinas – Chief Financial Officer and Deputy City Manager for Internal Services

Mario D’Agostino -Deputy City Manager for Public Safety

Nicole Ferrini – Community and Human Development Director

Dionne Mack – Deputy City Manager for Quality of Life

El Pasoans stated there are a few qualities they would like to see in the next city manager, including knowledge and transparency.

El Pasoan Jesus Aguirre said,“It needs to be a person that they know, that knows what’s going on, they know how to, how to run a big organization like the city.”

D’Agostino’s role with the city places him in charge of the city’s response to community emergencies, in his role he also oversees a large portion of the city’s workforce including the police and fire departments.

Ferrini has helped with the development of strategies to address housing, homelessness, climate change, and other factors within the city.

Cortinas oversees the tax and comptroller’s office, as well as the office of management and budget. During his time working for the city, he served in various financial roles.

El Pasoans said that aside from qualified resumes, they are looking for transparency in the next city manager.

The City Council will conduct the interviews on Monday during the executive session.
