Three-time world champion Jorge Linares (47-5, 29 KO’s) will face Dominican Javier Fortuna (35-2-1, 24 KO’s) on August 28 at Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino, in Indio, California.

After Linares dispatched Carlos Morales in four rounds on February 14, he was aiming for a showdown with undefeated Ryan Garcia in the summer. That fight never materialized and Linares and his reps switched their focus to another fight.

“We wanted that lawsuit (with Garcia). Jorge wanted that fight more than anyone, ” said José De La Cruz, who handles Linares.” I think his training camp was unreasonable with Golden Boy, “he added.

Regarding a possible fight on July 4 between the two, Garcia’s representative, Lupe Valencia, said: “What they offered Ryan was not acceptable. We cannot accept it if we know it is not reasonable,” he said.

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, told Espn: “Fortuna was willing to fight almost anyone, he was available. So we made the offer to Linares and he took it immediately,” he added.

Gomez said that There is a chance that this fight could be contested for the WBC Interim Lightweight Title.

“It was obvious,” said De La Cruz. “I think it is the right time for Jorge to fight for a world title and stay active. He will be 35 when he fights. How many fights does he have left? We all want to know,” he said.

Linares has had a memorable career, full of important victories and amazing defeats.

He has captured world titles at 126, 130 and 135 pounds, but never had a long history with any of those belts. He has victories over Oscar Larios, Kevin Mitchell, Anthony Crolla, and Luke Campbell. Additionally, he gave Vasiliy Lomachenko his toughest test to date as a professional.

Fortuna, 31, who is Espn’s 8th lightweight, once had the WBA 130-pound title and recorded a great performance in knocking out Jesus Cuellar in two rounds last November.

The Golden Boy undercard on August 28 is slated to be the second promotion of the summer.
