Chicago. Federal prosecutors requested that Ismael The May Zambada García be transferred to New York to face his judicial process before the same courts where Joaquín was tried El Chapo Guzman and Genaro Garcia Luna.
A federal judge in the Western District Court of Texas has yet to approve prosecutors’ request in Zambada’s case. If she does, the case will be prosecuted in the Eastern District Court of New York based in Brooklyn.
Zambada faces indictments in five U.S. courts, including one in New York that was updated with new charges in February of this year, which added manufacturing and distribution to the United States of fentanyl-containing products, along with previous charges including conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering, running a criminal enterprise, trafficking cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, among others, committed between 2014 and January 2024.
When the updated indictment against Zambada was announced, U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stressed that it demonstrates a “firm commitment to bringing him to justice, just as we did with his former co-conspirator El Chapo.” DEA Director Anne Milgram said in February that fenanyl “is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45, and we must continue to hold Zambada Garcia and other cartel leaders, members and associates accountable for the people they have killed.”
The prosecutors’ request is apparently expected to be approved as even one of Zambada’s attorneys, Frank Perez of Dallas, Texas, had already requested permission from the courts in New York to be able to practice his duties there.
