Anwar El Ghazi shared a surprising statement through his social media on Friday night. The Dutch football player has announced that he wants to donate half a million euros to help children in Gaza. That money comes from a lawsuit he won against his former employer FSV Mainz, which earned him around 1.7 million euros in total.
“After receiving a large amount of money from Mainz today, I would like to make it clear that the legal battle was never about the money for me,” wrote El Ghazi. “Of the large amount, half a million will be used to support projects to fund children in Gaza.”
EL Ghazi was completed in November 2023 has been dismissed by Mainz, after posting it on social media the controversial slogan “From river to sea, Palestine will be free” was written. A legal battle that was finally decided in El Ghazi’s favor continued in July 2024, after an appeal by the German court.
El Ghazi says in his statement that he would like to thank Mainz for two things. “First, for the payment. I hope that, despite the failed attempts to avoid this payment, Mainz will find comfort in the fact that through me they are contributing to an effort to improve the lives of the children in Gaza a little more bearable,” he writes.
“And secondly, by trying to silence me, Mainz only made my voice stronger for the oppressed and voiceless people of Gaza.
