Cuban reggaeton artist Abel Díaz Rodríguez, better known by his stage name as El Chulo, spoke about the current situation in Cuba, and how it influenced him to leave the country.
During an interview with presenter Enrique Santos, the urban singer addressed various topics, from personal aspects to his political and artistic perspective.
On this occasion, he expressed his opinion about the political situation in Cuba, and although he clarified that he has no knowledge of politics, he is clear that the communist regime is a dictatorship that oppresses Cubans, which is why change in the country is urgent.
“In Cuba there is a dictatorship that is killing our Cuban brothers and we urgently need change,” he stated.
The repressive government of Cuba is not only manifested in the lack of freedom of expression on the Island, but in the acute economic crisis and excessive inflation that is being experienced, which the singer considers one of the most damaging aspects of it.
In that sense, he was asked if he had not faced economic challenges upon his arrival in Miami, to which he responded with his current success, which has been possible despite his dark past.
“I was imprisoned for a problem I had outside a nightclub for attempted murder, that was the charge they gave me. I was in prison for a year,” he revealed.
“Today I charge here in Miami 30 thousand dollars per show and outside of Miami 18 thousand and thank God it is 3 and 4 every month,” he added.
The interview made it clear that El Chulo’s position against the Cuban regime remains intact, and that he has the determination to continue making music that can carry his message and at the same time sound to give him the success that he continues to pursue now abroad.
