The property was the winner over 23 candidates proposed by 11 municipalities. In November, the 8 millionth tree will be planted, the designs of the urban forest will be presented and the intervention will take place in 2024.
B-268 Cali, October 12, 2023.
As part of the celebration of World Tree Day, the CVC today planted nearly a thousand trees in different places in the Valley, reaching 7 million 800 thousand, thus approaching the goal of 8 million of the Greener Valley program. In addition, he revealed that El Cerrito is the winning municipality of the call to house the emblematic 8 millionth tree and a new urban forest.
This is the Los Samanes Park that will seek to be articulated with a network of parks to form a large urban forest for El Cerrito. A “Fairy Forest” is also planned there, which will be a space for contemplation, as will be the site where the 8 millionth tree will be planted. The site will also have a space called the Butterfly Garden-Labyrinth and a small square for cultural events and presentations.
The El Cerrito property was the winner over a total of 23 properties that were proposed by the municipalities of Cali, Yumbo, Vijes, El Cerrito, Dagua, Buga, La Unión, Ansermanuevo, El Cairo, Riofrío and Caicedonia.
“For the election, criteria were taken into account such as the size of the property, the benefited population, the possibility of generating connectivity with areas of environmental interest, the percentage of tree planting in the municipality, and the possibility of mitigating heat islands. Architects, landscapers, environmental administrators, forestry engineers and social workers, among other professionals, made up the jury,” explained Marco Antonio Suárez Gutiérrez, general director of the CVC.
In the month of November, the 8 millionth tree will be planted, the designs of the urban forest will be presented and the intervention will take place in 2024.
A thousand trees were planted in one day
The World Tree Day event in Cali began at Cerro de La Bandera, a model of environmental recovery that was recently affected by forest fires and invasion attempts. 50 trees were planted there. Subsequently, another planting day was carried out in the middle basin of the Cali River. There, on the Piedragrande property, a hundred trees of the species iguá, gualanday, hobo, red guava, carob, chambimbe and guadua among others were planted. In addition, strips of fire-resistant species such as cabuya were planted.
“This site is part of the tropical dry forest ecosystem and the idea with the intervention is to protect it from interventions such as fires and invasions and generate a corridor with the Botanical Garden and the San Antonio forest at kilometer 18, with a view, in the medium term “, that it is another site for environmental education and the contemplation of nature.”
The Piedra Grande property is located in the protection area of the Cali River basin, above the intake that supplies a part of the city’s population.
Environmental managers and inhabitants of Commune 1 participated in the day, most of them children like the 6-year-old Michelle Gómez who planted a guamo. “It was very nice, I like to plant trees because it is Arbor Day,” she said.
Lina Milena Candela, for her part, assured that this planting is excellent, “because trees are needed to generate oxygen and to teach children that the environment must be taken care of by planting trees.”
In addition, plantings were carried out in Alcalá, Ansermanuevo, Cartago, Argelia, El Águila, El Cairo, Ulloa, Guacarí, Riofrío, Trujillo, el Cerrito, Ginebra, Buga, San Pedro Yotoco, La Cumbre, Caicedonia, Sevilla Andalucía and Buenaventura.
These plantings are done taking advantage of the arrival of the October and November rains which, although they will be less intense due to the El Niño Phenomenon, will allow these reforestation tasks to be carried out with adequate maintenance.
