Ekstraklasa: Who will play in the cups? Closest to Piast and Lech

Legia freezes champagne

Four Polish teams will play in European cups. The Polish champion will qualify for the Champions League, while the other teams will play in the Europa League qualifying rounds. Looking at the table, it can be assumed that Legia Warszawa will play in LM.

The military have an eleven points advantage over the second team in the table, and four queues remain until the end of the season. This means that rivals can still gain a maximum of twelve “points” and only a cataclysm will take Legia championship.

The fierce battle for the Europa League

However, it is much more interesting in the fight for new positions. Currently, the places that guarantee cup games are Piast Gliwice and Lech Poznan. Both teams have fifty-four points. Behind them, however, lurk Śląsk Wrocław (53 points) and Lechia Gdańsk (52 points).

From a mathematical point of view, Jagiellonia Białystok, Cracovia and Pogoń Szczecin also have a chance to play in the European League qualifying rounds, but their loss is already six and eight points, so the fight for the cups should take place without them.

A better schedule

Analyzing the schedule of individual teams, it can be concluded that Piast and Lech are in the best position. Both teams will play three more home matches. Silesia and Lechia will have to fight twice in foreign stadiums.

Piast in the remaining four matches has only one rival from the top four – Slask Wroclaw. The situation is similar in Lech, who will play against Legia Warsaw and Silesia (match with Piast). The worst in this respect is Lechia, who will play three times against the top four (against Lech, Legia and Silesia).

Below we present the schedule of all four to the end of the season (D – home match, W – away match):

Piast Gliwice – 54 points

  • vs Slask Wroclaw (D)
  • vs Jagiellonia Białystok (D)
  • vs Pogoń Szczecin (W)
  • vs Cracovia (D)

Lech Poznan – 54 points

  • vs Legia Warsaw (D)
  • vs Lechia Gdańsk (D)
  • vs Cracovia (W)
  • vs Jagiellonia Białystok (D)

Slask Wrocław – 53 points

  • vs Piast Gliwice (W)
  • vs Pogoń Szczecin (D)
  • vs Jagiellonia Białystok (W)
  • vs Lechia Gdańsk (D)

Lechia Gdańsk – 52 points

  • vs Cracovia (D)
  • vs Lech Poznan (W)
  • vs Legia Warsaw (D)
  • vs Slask Wroclaw (W)

Many possibilities

In the nearest queue, none of the teams will be able to ensure themselves playing in the Europa League qualifying, but one of them can very minimize their chances.

If Lechia lose to Cracovia, and Piast and Lech win their matches, then the difference will be five points, and by the end of the season you will be able to get nine “points”.

It is known, however, that if Piast and Lech win the next two matches and their rivals lose them, then the teams from Gliwice and Poznan will have some games in the LE qualifying rounds.

An extra chance

However, this is not the end, because the third place in the Europa League will be won by Totolotek of the Polish Cup. In the semi-finals, Cracovia will play against Legia, and Lech against Lechia. If the trophy is won by a team that is not on the league podium, then it will play in the cups.

If the PP winner is on the podium, then the fourth team in the league table will have an extra place. So there is certainly something to fight for, the more that the national cup final will be played on July 24, i.e. after the end of the PKO Ekstraklasa games.
