EK Draconis is a star that resembles our Sun. It is of a similar size and weight. Astrologers have been watching it for years, researchers have said that such a powerful eruption has never been recorded on the Sun.
An explosion on the surface of a star is known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) from its atmosphere. As the space expert Radosław Kosarzycki explains, when it takes place on the Sun, the star ejects huge clouds of plasma that travel at the speed of millions of kilometers per hour. An exceptionally strong eruption in the Sun could lead to a global catastrophe.
Worryingly, the eruption is 10 times stronger than ever. Additionally, the energy from its outbursts spreads at a higher speed. Scientists analyze whether the Sun is capable of such activity. It is possible that the Sun has experienced very strong flares in the past.
