The guests, where coach Thomas Reis compared to the 2-1 against Greuther Fürth Masovic, Bockhorn, Stafylidis, Osterhage and Asano for Danilo Soares, Leitsch (both Covid-19), Gamboa (yellow card suspension), Löwen and Antwi-Adjei (both Bank) had set up, initially seemed a bit shaky defensively. On the offensive, however, VfL was by no means hiding – and cheered somewhat surprisingly. Polter headed a free kick from Stafylidis into the net (19′).
Frankfurt too unimaginative – and calls for penalties
Bochum then showed how inspired by the goal, acted much more confidently and almost had to extend the lead: After an outstanding combination, Asano failed from close range to Trapp (24th). But that shouldn’t take revenge at first. Frankfurt seemed too unimaginative and imprecise against the well-stacked VfL defense and made plenty of hasty bad passes. The pace of the game, which was still intense at the beginning, ebbed away more and more. Until just before the break.
The ball just missed the Bochum goal in the 40th minute – and Bella Kotchap’s own goal. A minute later, Frankfurt demanded a penalty kick after Bockhorn had hit Kostic in the penalty area. But the whistle didn’t sound even after a VAR check, which was also justifiable. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Hinteregger was also denied by Riemann (45+2).

Once Masovic, once Kamada: SGE with the double strike
After the restart, the SBU acted more callous. When Lindström finished, Masovic kept his foot in between and put the ball into his own net (46′). Similarly, the hosts completed the double just five minutes and eleven seconds later. Again Lindström brought the ball in the direction of the goal, again a player put his foot in between: Kamada pushed in from close range to make it 2-1 (52nd) – the game was turned.
After that, Eintracht kept their foot on the gas and got into a frenzy. Again and again the SBU started attacking actions with immense speed. The third hit was in the air, but should not fall. A promising chance fizzled out after a bad pass from the otherwise conspicuous Knauff (69th).
Trapp saves three points
In the closing stages, the home side concentrated more and more on the defensive, while the guests struggled but rarely became really dangerous. Shortly before the final whistle, Trapp still had to save against Locadia and Antwi-Adjei (90′). It was the final deserved victory for the home side.
So Frankfurt goes into the round of 16 second leg in the Europa League at home against Betis Sevilla on Thursday (9 p.m.) with a success in the back. Bochum welcomes Gladbach on Friday (8.30 p.m.).
