Einstein’s Alleged Rejected Doctoral Thesis: Fact or Fiction?

Compiled by: Betül Yasemin Keskin / Milliyet.com.tr – Considered one of the greatest scientists of all time, German theoretical physicist Albert Einstein left his mark on his time with his intelligence. The unknown aspects of Einstein, who continues to be remembered with respect by the whole world even after his death, his memories and what he left behind continue to come to the fore from time to time. Another thing that creates curiosity about him is Allegation that his doctoral thesis was rejected. So, is the document claiming that Einstein did art, not physics, real or the product of speculation?

‘WE THINK IT IS ARTISTIC MORE THAN PHYSICAL’

It all started in May 2016, when an image, now referred to as X, began circulating on Twitter. However, when the post, which did not attract much attention at that time, came to the fore again recently, things got a bit confusing.. In the post, it was written on a yellow paper from 1907 that Einstein’s doctorate application was rejected by the University of Bern in Switzerland. Moreover, this letter was not a simple rejection. This paper, signed by the dean named Wilhelm Heinrich, contained the following lines:

“Since your application for the doctorate was not successful, you are not suitable for the position of associate professor. While you put forward interesting theories in your article published in the journal ‘Annalen der Physik’, we believe that your conclusions about the nature of light and the fundamental connection between space and time are a bit radical. In general, we think that your assumptions are more artistic than real physics. Best regards .”

This letter, which at first glance seemed like a real example of failure, divided those who saw it. While some said that this was a fake letter, others said, “Even if you are Einstein, you can fail in this life.”

Before examining the details of this letter, it is also useful to say that Einstein started working as a lecturer at the University of Bern in 1908. According to this scenario, Einstein was accepted as a lecturer in 1908 at the school where he was rejected in 1907. When viewed from here, it may seem like a real success story. “Einstein was rejected, but he did not give up and eventually succeeded” You can think like this: But the reality is a little different.

Careful X users who examined the letter listed numerous mistakes made in this letter, which they believed to be fiction. Some of the most notable errors were as follows:

1- The University of Bern, located in a country where the main language is German (Switzerland), would not have sent a letter written in English to the German-speaking Einstein, who published his academic works in German. Because even today Switzerland has four official languages, none of which are English.

2- The second mistake is that this form of address would not be used in a letter written in 1907. Because Sidlerstrasse was called Sternwartsstrasse before 1931, and Switzerland did not adopt the four-digit postcode system until the 1960s. However, there were no details on the paper proving these.

3- The final mistake was that there was never a dean or professor named Wilhelm Heinrich at the University of Bern. The round stamp seen at the bottom of the letter had no connection with the university. Although it was not said in the letter, it was implied that Einstein could not be the dean of Science. It couldn’t happen anyway, because the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities had not yet been separated in those years.

Almost everyone was convinced that this letter, which took social media by storm and confused people about Einstein, was far from reality.

Although this image appears to be an actual letter that Einstein once received from the University of Bern, what is actually depicted here is It is no different from a fictional text used as decoration or offered for sale in a souvenir shop.
