The nine terror suspects arrested in Eindhoven last week will remain in pre-trial detention for two weeks longer. This has been decided by the examining magistrate of the court in Rotterdam.
The nine were born last Thursday arrested suspected of preparing and training for a terrorist attack. It concerns men between the ages of 18 and 31. All have Dutch nationality, Eight were born in the Netherlands and one in Afghanistan.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the arrest of the men averted a terrorist threat. It is still unclear what the target of the threat was. It is known, however, that the terrorist threat is associated with the jihadist ideas of the terrorist group IS, with which the suspects feel connected.
No weapons or explosives were found during the arrest. However, data carriers have been seized.
No contact with the outside world
Last summer, the Public Prosecution Service started the investigation into the group together with the National Criminal Investigation Service. They did this on the basis of information from the AIVD intelligence service.
The suspects are only allowed to have contact with their lawyers. Some lawyers have previously expressed regret that the Public Prosecution Service released the news about the arrests at an “early stage”.
“It seems that the Public Prosecution Service has not taken into account that these are still suspects. Every Dutch person now thinks that the suspects have something to do with terrorism,” lawyer Serge Weening told NOS last week. His law firm is assisting two of the nine suspects.
