Eilat Under Attack: The Growing Threat from Drones and Missiles

The Israeli occupation army said Thursday that an unknown drone hit a building in the southern city of Eilat. His spokesman, Avichai Adraee, wrote on the “X” platform: “A short while ago, a drone struck a civilian building in the city of Eilat. The diagnosis of the drone and the details of the incident are still under investigation.”

Israeli media reported that a strong explosion was heard in the city of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, south of occupied Palestine. The Hebrew Channel 14 reported that the attack on Eilat was carried out by a suicide drone carrying explosives. Israeli ambulance services announced that they treated 7 Israelis injured as a result of the panic caused by the strong sound of the explosion.

Eilat is not safe for refugees

Umm al-Rashrash, or what is known as Eilat, is an occupied Palestinian city located on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea. It was built in 1953 and is located in the far south of the occupied Palestinian territories, between the Jordanian city of Aqaba to the east and the Egyptian town of Taba to the west.

After the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, Eilat was a destination for survivors and fugitives from the settlements surrounding the Gaza Strip and settlements in the north of the occupied Palestinian territories on the border with Lebanon. According to the Hebrew newspaper Maariv, Eilat has accommodated more than 60,000 settlers.

But after the arrival of drones and winged missiles, in addition to the high possibility of the arrival of ballistic missiles from Yemen, Eilat turned from a safe haven into a city living under emergency law at all levels, so Israel began deploying gunboats in the Red Sea as part of military reinforcements, and deploying “Saar”-class corvettes. “It patrols near the port of Eilat on the Red Sea, and work has begun to bring in multiple systems in an attempt to protect it with the increase in the frequency of almost daily targeting of it.

Al-Houthi adopts

On Monday, the Yemeni Houthi group announced the launch of a batch of drones on “sensitive targets inside Israel,” after similar attacks last week.

The “Israeli Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center” said that the Houthis possess effective ballistic missiles of the “Quds 2” and “Quds 3” models, with a range of 1,300-2,000 kilometers, and they can effectively hit targets in Israel, which is more than 1,500 kilometers away from Yemen. .

The center indicated in a report that the Houthis possess a huge arsenal of drones, such as: “Samad 3”, which has a range of 1,500-2,000 km, and “Samad 4”, which has a range of more than 2,000 km, as well as the “Waid” drone, which has a range of Between 2000-2200 km.

In addition, the Houthis have Iranian Shahed 136 suicide drones, very similar to those used by the Russian army to attack Ukraine, and this aircraft is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 2,200 kilometers.
