JAKARTA – Head of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology (LBM), Amin Soebandrio, is targeting the production of red and white vaccines as much as 50% of domestic demand.
“We are determined that at least we can meet the vaccine needs of 50% of the domestic vaccine needs,” he said in a statement to SINDO Media, Jakarta (14/8/2020).
Amin said that although domestic production is as much as 350 million doses per year, the vaccination process cannot be completed in a week.
“But we also have to remember that even if we have production facilities, for example 350 million doses per year, it means that we can not complete the vaccination program in an instant, not in a week,” he said.
Amin predicts that with the population of Indonesia, the vaccination process will be around 1 year at the fastest. “We can only complete the vaccination program in 1 year at the earliest. If we wait from abroad we have to wait longer, “said Amin.
At present, vaccine production with domestic cooperation is very helpful to meet the needs of the Covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. Although it cannot fully meet domestic vaccine needs.
“But foreign production can help us. But we also have to remember that vaccines produced abroad cannot meet all these needs in Indonesia. They may even need 20 to 40% of the vaccine needs. Most of the 60% minimum 50% must be met by domestic production, ”said Amin.
Meanwhile, Amin also responded to the question whether the red and white vaccine was better than the foreign vaccine? “I didn’t say that, huh. This means we are trying to make the best possible vaccine. It means, if everything can be done domestically, “he explained.
However, Amin said Indonesia could not rely on foreign vaccine production. “Because Indonesia truly is a country with a very large population, we cannot depend on foreign production. We do open cooperation with foreign countries if they have already, please. As long as it meets the requirements set by the Ministry of Health and the POM, “he said.
