Eighty-two Nobel Prize winners support Kamala Harris

(ANSA) – NEW YORK, OCTOBER 24 – About eighty American Nobel Prize winners for physics, chemistry, medicine and economics have signed a letter in support of the election of Kamala Harris as president. “We are facing an election with the greatest consequences on the future of science and the United States”, warned the 82 Nobel Prize winners who signed the open letter published by the New York Times. The signatories praise Harris for understanding how “tremendous increases in the standards and length of life over the past two centuries are due in large measure to advances in science and technology,” while Donald Trump, if elected, “would endanger any advance our living standards, would slow advances in science and technology and impede our response to climate change.” The text developed by economist Joseph Stiglitz has been signed by, among others, Gary Ruvkun, David Baker, John Hopfield and Daron Acemoglu, all winners of the Nobel Prizes in medicine, chemistry, physics and economics respectively in recent weeks . Stiglitz, professor at Columbia and Nobel Prize winner in 2001, explained that he was pushed to undertake this initiative by the “enormous cuts in science budgets” proposed during the Trump presidency and by the attitude of the former president who, in his opinion, is “anti-science” and “anti-university”.
