About a thousand rescue workers are working in the area. They search for victims with the help of rescue boats, army drones and sniffer dogs.
Japanese Prime Minister Suga says rescuers are doing their utmost to help people who may still be covered in mud and waiting for help. “Despite the heavy rainfall, rescue efforts will continue,” he said.
Atami is located on a hill, like many other places in Japan. The authorities are patrolling several places because the danger of new mudslides has not yet passed.
