Eighteen killed in attack at educational center in Afghan capital Kabul | NOW

A suicide bomber blew himself up on Saturday at an education center in the Afghan capital Kabul. At least eighteen people died and at least 48 others were injured. Islamic State (IS) says it is responsible for the attack.

Despite the Taliban and Afghan government holding peace talks in Qatar to end the war ravaging the country, violence has intensified in recent weeks. The Taliban had already denied any involvement in the attack earlier on Saturday.

The suicide bombing was carried out at a center in western Kabul that offers training and courses to higher education students. “A suicide bomber wanted to enter the education center,” an Interior Ministry spokesman said in a statement. “But he was identified by the guards at the center, then detonated his explosives in an alley.”

Residents in various districts of western Kabul belong to the Shia Hazara community, often the target of Sunni extremists from IS. In the past, extremists have attacked several educational centers in the area.
