In the Egyptian capital Cairo, at least 18 people were killed by the collapse of a building. The nine-storey building, in the Salam neighborhood, collapsed this morning. The victims were found during the day.
Several dozen people have been taken to hospital with injuries. There is a fear that more bodies will be recovered.
The cause of the collapse is not yet clear, but buildings in the country often collapse, especially in rural areas and in the poorest areas of cities. Not infrequently construction errors play a role. Floors are often built without a permit being issued.
The authorities have recently been taking tougher action against it. People in the construction world have been arrested and sometimes buildings are being demolished.
