A total of eight people are trapped in a gondola above a valley in the Battagram district of Pakistan, reports AFP.
Six of these will be school children.
According to AFP, the gondola hangs 275 meters above the ground as a result of one of the cables having broken, writes AFP, which refers to the country’s national emergency preparedness.
According to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn the accident happened somewhere between 07 and 08 local time, when the children were on their way to school.
According to the newspaper, the gondola will be private and run by locals, as there are no roads or bridges in the area.
According to the newspaper, local rescue teams are in place, but as a result of the height and the steep terrain, they have so far been unsuccessful in the rescue operation.
At 09:00, Norwegian time, the persons must have been confined for around four to five hours.
A local teacher at the children’s school tells the newspaper that there is a mobile phone on board the gondola and that he has received a message that one of the children has fainted from fear.
He further explains that around 150 pupils take this trip daily to get to school.
The country’s military emergency team is now assisting in the operation, writes Dawn. The country’s interim prime minister, Anwarul Haq Kakar, has stated that all available and necessary resources must be used in the rescue effort.
