Eight months in prison for killing a runner in Zaltbommel

A 39-year-old man from Oss has been sentenced to eight months in prison for killing a 52-year-old runner in Zaltbommel. He must also cooperate in treatment against alcohol and drugs.

On top of the eight months, the man gets another eight months probation. If the man goes wrong again in three years, he must still serve that suspended sentence. The verdict is heavier than the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service. He was jailed for 12 months, four of which were conditional.

The man will be sentenced for a collision on May 30 this year. He ran into a runner in the outskirts of Zaltbommel, who died of his injuries. After the collision, the driver fled. Due to a tip from a friend, he was later arrested at Venlo station. According to the OM, the man was planning to flee to Germany.

No driver’s license

After his arrest, the Ossenaar turned out not to be in possession of a valid driver’s license, something for which he had already been convicted. The investigation also revealed that the man had been speeding when he caused the accident. He also had cocaine in his possession.

He expressed regret during the trial. “My words and actions will never take away the pain. I want to let you know that I am immensely sorry. I accept all punishment, it is my fault,” he said. Broadcasting Gelderland.
