Standing and applauding. This is how the eight models, mastectomized women who participated in the ‘Much to Live’ fashion show were received. Recognitions that the public that filled the Santa Ana Castle to the brim this Wednesday, have repeated, emotionally, on several occasions. And it is that the eight women operated on for breast cancer, who are in different stages of the disease.
The faces of the eight women showed the shared joy of this moment that contributes to their self-esteem, and from different situations they have come together to visualize women with breast cancer. Amelia Zamora Marín, from Almería, who had surgery two years ago, participated. She is “grateful for life and happy to be here today and to be able to transmit that you can live with this disease, that you have to be positive.” Fátima López Idáñez, diagnosed two years ago, “cancer reminded me that life is a journey and that it can end at any moment, so since then I live and enjoy it to the fullest with my people, leaving behind the heavy baggage of fears and unnecessary worries.”
Toñi Capel Lores, “When this disease knocked on my door I was very scared, but I have managed to overcome it. Even with my after-effects, but the most important thing is that I am alive thanks to my family and friends. I am the dance in the storm.” Pepa Magán Sánchez, from Roquetas de Mar, says that “last year I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. It has not been easy, but I did it. Today I am clean, and everything has been possible thanks to the support of my family and friends.”
Rosario García Salvador, from Almería, says that “after a long and difficult recovery process, here I am, ready to parade again with great enthusiasm, joy and hope. Thank you to the Association for its support at all stages and for allowing me to participate in this emotional event.”
María José Acedo Rubira admits that “breast cancer has taught me to value the present much more, without thinking so much about the future and remembering the past less. It is still a job that I have to do every day. You learn from everything, and the last relapse has shown me that we cannot control everything, and that whatever happens, it will always be the best thing that could happen to us. I am grateful to life.”
The seventh model is Mercedes Eulalia Lorca, who was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago. “I had factor 6, the worst. Now I wear a prosthesis and thanks to my family and students, because I am a sevillanas instructor, I am here and I can tell the tale. We must never give up and we must overcome the path that God has given us.”
Finally, Victoria Sánchez López, from Tíjola, was diagnosed three years ago. “All this has made me feel better, and I am now a stronger and, above all, happier woman. Finally, I want to thank you for being able to repeat this beautiful experience with my wonderful colleagues. This experience makes me feel like a confident and empowered woman. Thank you to everyone here and especially to those who fell by the wayside. A kiss to heaven.”
The eight women have paraded in lingerie and swimwear, much applauded, in an event presented by Alfonso López Salmerón, and the choreographies of the María Carricondo Dance Academy,
“They have shown great strength and are an example for other colleagues who have just been diagnosed with the disease,” said Magdalena Cantero, president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Almería, the event’s organizer, which had the collaboration of the Roquetas de Mar City Council.
Its mayor, Gabriel Amat, said that “it is a source of pride and satisfaction for Roquetas de Mar to hold this parade. We are pleased to collaborate with the work of such an important association as this one. The City Council has been committed to the fight against cancer for decades, and I remember how we already collaborated with a million pesetas to create a room for children with cancer in Torrecárdenas in the 1990s. They will always have us by their side.”
Magdalena Cantero wanted to “publicly thank Gabriel Amat, not only for the institutional support he provides to the association, but also for his personal involvement with our Association.” Focusing on the parade, the president explains that “we usually talk about pain, sadness and other situations related to cancer, but we came to talk about joy, life, research and to recognize the strength of mastectomized women. Women who were unable to go out on the street due to the after-effects a few years ago, and today they march proudly.”
The president of the Association, Magdalena Cantero, stated that “it is an activity with which we want, on the one hand, to influence the prevention and early detection of cancer, and, on the other, to support people with cancer and their families. The challenge is to achieve a 70% survival rate against cancer of any type by 2030. It is part of a programme in which we address the disease from a medical, psychological and social point of view.”
At her side, the president of the Local Board of the Association in Roquetas de María, María Dolores Núñez, highlighted “the response that the people of Roquetas always show. It has already been done in Almería and now in Roquetas de Mar, and the response is wonderful.”
The Mayor of Roquetas de Mar was accompanied by councillors Loles Moreno, María Ángeles Alcoba, Daniel Salcedo and Susi Ibáñez, and was also attended by the President of the College of Physicians of Almería, Francisco Martínez Amo, and the Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability, Health and Sport of the UAL, Gabriel Aguilera,
In 2023, 3,737 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the province of Almería, of which 481 were due to breast cancer. Along these lines, 1,343 people died from cancer, of which 90 were due to breast cancer. That is why check-ups and early prevention are important.
This activity has had the collaboration of Ortopedia del Río and the brand of swimsuits, bras and prostheses Anita, the Centro Capilar Miranda with the wigs of the brand ‘Marvi’; Loli García and Bernardino Pérez; Athenea hairdressing and beauty salon; Isa Núñez Beauty and Wellbeing; Mirun Infinitum; Rodrimar; Congresur; María Carricondo Dance Academy, Julio Crespo Jiménez and Antonio Pérez.
