Eight European public broadcasters, including the NPO, will collaborate in the field of fiction series in the coming years. Under the name New8, they will produce eight TV series every year in varying compositions and share them with each other.

The news was revealed on Tuesday at the MIA audiovisual fair in Rome.

NPO board chairman Frederieke Leeflang calls the collaboration “great news for fans of high-quality fiction series throughout Europe”.

“At a time when competition for European viewers is increasing, this feels like a logical step for us as public broadcasters to take, especially when it comes to efficient use of public money. We are convinced that it will benefit quality of European fiction,” says Leeflang.

The first series should be shown in 2025

A similar collaboration already existed in Scandinavia. According to the NPO, New8 should therefore be seen as an extension of this.

The partners have entered into an agreement for an initial period of three years. The first series will be given the green light in 2023 and will be available for publication in all participating countries from 2025.
