Armed violence at its strongest across the Atlantic. According to a survey carried out by several American media, starting with CNN, a dozen shootings left at least eight dead and sixty injured, between March 18 and 20. One of the heaviest human tolls over the past two years, believe our colleagues.
From Arkansas (central-east of the country), to the state of Virginia (north-east), at least 107 shootings have taken place since January 1, 2022, according to the gun violence observatory Gun Violence Archive.
Last drama to date, Saturday March 19, during a motor show in Dumas (Arkansas) where a person was killed by bullets and 27 others were injured. The worst injury record since 2019. A few hours later, in North Carolina, a shooting leaves three people dead in a hotel in Fayetteville. According to investigators, “the shooting was not random”.
The carrying of firearms, an eminently political subject in the country
This resurgence of violence comes even as Joe Biden’s government is trying to legislate on the carrying of weapons. A constitutional principle in the United States. However, the current President of the United States must face the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA)which defends tooth and nail the right to own and bear arms.
At the same time, at least seven states across the country have adopted measures promoting this constitutional right. Some laws allowing citizens to legally carry concealed weaponsin public, without training in the handling of weapons, or permits, report our American colleagues.
