A source in the French police announced that the Eiffel Tower in Paris was closed to the public, on Saturday, after it was evacuated as part of precautionary measures, following a “bomb threat”.
The security alert led to the evacuation of 3 floors of the tower located in central Paris, France’s most prominent tourist attraction, which attracted 6.2 million visitors last year.
The authority that runs the tower said that bomb disposal experts and police were inspecting the premises, including a restaurant located in the tower.
A spokeswoman said: “This is standard procedure in this type of situation, but it is rare.”
Visitors were evacuated from 3 floors and from the courtyard at the bottom of the tower.
The construction of the Eiffel Tower dates back to 1887, and construction work ended in March 1889, and in the same year it received two million visitors.
