The headquarters of the UN peacekeeping force Unifil was hit several times in an exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on Thursday, the force itself has confirmed.
They claim it was an Israeli tank that fired on their soldiers. There was no official statement from the Israeli military (IDF) about the operation at the Unifil headquarters.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs says that the Unifil force must reduce conflict and monitor the situation.
– The location and infrastructure of the UN is known and clearly identified. Therefore, it is very objectionable that the Israeli forces have now fired at a number of Unifil positions, said Eide in a message to several media on Thursday night.
He remembers that the UN Security Council decided in 2006 that only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces should be deployed between the Israeli border and the Litani River.
– I make an urgent appeal to all parties to respect humanitarian law and protect civilians. All parties must respect and comply with Security Council Resolution 1701, said the Foreign Minister.
